how hell works
03:18
|
|||
here to see to every ounce and inch
of a fawning affection
it's an act you've exactly honed
to perfection
yr a slim job now, but yr slumming
in this town
and the film script fits in yr purse anyhow
how hell works involves yr giving and yr taking
how hell works involves yr giving and yr taking
and those sad, sad nights when it's obvious yr faking,
but if you could just be still for an hour, ten minutes,
ten seconds
an horizon's there to meet you
calling from the fault line
live it up! live it up! live it up! live it up!
...cuz it's all gonna end, kid
but of course you know i am friend.

the totem
02:27
|
|||
a small totem taken out of desperation
into the jungle (no more water)
no more fooling around
this is not where you belong
you come here decked out like you own it--
but it's gonna get you (and yes, it WILL destroy you)
so pick one path, for it will be yr last
survey, survey. go have yr play.
but it is not yrs to tame. it will tame you
under it's own foot.
and awe should be yr only emotion.
low blood pressure. take a quick trip down.
now pay attention to the film in yr head:
rememeber what you saw there--nothing.
there's nothing on the other side.
(key: debunking the near-death experience i had in the summer of 2010. i dropped like a stone due to internal bleeding, hit my head, spiralled down into a black, black darkness devoid of any peace or glorious white light. kinda sucked. i guess the seizures didn't help either...kinda a downer, but it stayed with me that horrible feeling. i am afraid of death.)

frozen daughter
03:34
|
|||
a spark hoping it will last.
to catch a force (gives yr silly head a blast)
take these "two gallants"; hit them in the face.
fully throw down the gauntlet.
i recognize yr faces--and yr gonna pay!
poor christian daughter. you were quite forward...
why aren't we left with laughter?
sore arms pierced with arrows. rabid mohegans, gathering drums together (for the peace-out tonight!);
hunting party laughter is quieted by the sight
of his frozen daughter
put some sap back into her!
she is the Tree Girl!
now disguised by coldest water
inching toward Creator
i'll be at the bar tonight;
i got my fightin skins out.
the Great Sickness is upon me!
i got my fighting skins out.
(notes: the Mohegans were native to the part of Connecticut i grew up in. they should not be confused with the Mohicans as popularised by James Fenimore Cooper in "the Last Of the Mohicans". he was a bit confused with the difference, understandably. the Mohicans lived along the banks of the Hudson River. Mohegan means "wolf" while Mohican means "from the waters that are never still." That is the Mohican name for the Hudson River.
um, this just kinda wrote itself very quickly and seems to be a grab bag of dreams and recurring obsessive images that wouldn't leave my head shortly after some seizures i had on my bathroom floor. the two "gallants" referred to are a reference to the James Joyce short story "Two Gallants" from his excellent short story collection "Dubliners". i think this tune has something to do with an earnest quest for redemption and resurection (both figuratively and literally), and a brazen resignation to damnation. perhaps best appreciated without trying to make too much literal sense of it. one of the best tunes i ever wrote in my life.)
